Esmonde Corbet graduated in Dentistry from the National University of Ireland at University College Dublin in 1975.  Before coming to Hong Kong in 1980, he was a Lecturer in Periodontology at the Royal Dental Hospital, School of Dental Surgery, University of London.  At The University of Hong Kong, Esmonde Corbet was first a Lecturer, then a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor and since January 2006 is a Professor in Periodontology in the Faculty of Dentistry.  He has been in administrative charge of the Periodontology and Public Health Area since 1993.  He is currently both the Senior Clinician and the Postgraduate Programme Director in Periodontology.  His major research interests are the epidemiology of periodontal diseases and risk assessment for periodontal destruction, clinical management of, including dental implants in, periodontal patients, and evaluation of the outcomes of dental education.  He is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology.  He is currently a member of the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Dental Education, Clinical Oral Implants Research and the Journal of Periodontal Research.
